GUINEA PIG HEALTH PROBLEMS

Guinea pigs are susceptible to a wide assortment of health problems. We have encountered all of the following problems in our GP patients.

  • Abscesses
  • Alopecia - hair loss
  • Anorexia and pseudoanorexia - not eating or unable to eat
  • Antibiotic-associated enterotoxemia
  • Cervical lymphadenitis - swollen lymph nodes in the neck, usually due to Strep. Zooepidemicus infection
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Constipation
  • Cheilitis - inflammation and infection of the lips
  • Eye and eyelid problems
  • Dental disease
  • Diarrhea
  • Fleas
  • Gastric dilatation and volvulus
  • Gastric hypomotility and stasis - loss of normal contractions in stomach and intestines
  • Heat stroke
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypovitaminosis C
  • Neurologic problems
    • Ataxia
    • Head tilt - middle and inner ear problems
    • Paralysis and paresis (weakness)
    • Seizures
  • Perineal sac impaction, rectal impaction impaction of the sacs around the anus
  • Polyuria and polydypsia - increased thirst and urination
  • Reproductive problems
    • Dystocia - difficulty giving birth
    • Neoplasia
    • Pregnancy toxemia
    • Pyometra and other uterine problems
    • Vaginitis and vaginal tumors
  • Respiratory problems
    • Pneumonia
    • Rhinitis and sinusitis - sneezing and nasal discharge
  • Skin problems
    • Abscesses
    • Alopecia
    • Bacterial infection
    • Cysts
    • Fungal infection - ringworm
    • Parasites - fleas, lice, mites
    • Pododermatitis - foot problems, bumblefoot
    • Poor fur coat without itch
    • Tumors
  • Trichobezoars and phytobezoars
